Fighting Spam



How prevalent is Spam?  According to Scott McAdams, OMA Public Affairs and Communications Department (www.oma.org):
“Studies show unsolicited or “junk” e-mail, known as spam, accounts for roughly half of all e-mail messages received. Although once regarded as little more than a nuisance, the prevalence of spam has increased to the point where many users have begun to express a general lack of confidence in the effectiveness of e-mail transmissions, and increased concern over the spread of computer viruses via unsolicited messages.”

In 2003, President Bush signed the  “Can Spam” bill, in December of 2003 which is the first national standards around bulk unsolicited commercial e-mail.  The bill, approved by the Senate by a vote of 97 to 0, prohibits senders of unsolicited commercial e-mail from using false return addresses to disguise their identity (spoofing) and the use of dictionaries to generate such mailers. In addition, it prohibits the use of misleading subject lines and requires that emails include and opt-out mechanism. The legislation also prohibits senders from harvesting addresses off Web sites. Violations constitute a misdemeanor crime subject to up to one year in jail. 
One major point that needs to be discussed about this:  spam is now coming from other countries in ever-greater numbers. These emails are harder to fight, because they come from outside our country’s laws and regulations.  Because the Internet opens borders and thinks globally, these laws are fine and good, but do not stop the problem.
So what do you do about this?  Her are the top 5 Rules to do to protect from spam.
Number 1:  Do what you can to avoid having your email address out on the net.  
There are products called “spam spiders” that search the Internet for email addresses to send email to.  If you are interested, do a search on “spam spider” and you will be amazed at what you get back.  Interestingly, there is a site, WebPoison.org, which is an open source project geared to fight Internet "spambots" and "spam spiders", by giving them bogus HTML web pages, which contain bogus email addresses
A couple suggestions for you:  a) use form emails, which can hide addresses or also b) use addresses like sales@company.com instead of your full address to help battle the problem. c) There are also programs that encode your email, like jsGuard, which encodes your email address on web pages so that while spam spiders find it difficult or impossible to read your email address.
Number 2:  Get spam blocking software.  There are many programs out there for this.  (go to www.cloudmark.com or www.mailwasher.net for example).  You may also buy a professional version.  Whatever you do, get the software. It will save you time.  The software is not foolproof, but they really do help.  You usually have to do some manual set up to block certain types of email.
Number 3: Use the multiple email address approach.
There are a lot of free email addresses to be had.  If you must subscribe to newsletters, then have a “back-up” email address. It would be like giving your sell phone number to your best friends and the business number to everyone else.
Number 4:  Attachments from people you don’t know are BAD, BAD, BAD.
A common problem with spam is that they have attachments and attachments can have viruses.  Corporations often have filters that don’t let such things pass to you.  Personal email is far more “open country” for spamers.  General rule of thumb:  if you do not know who is sending you something, DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT.  Secondly, look for services that offer filtering. Firewall vendors offer this type of service as well.
Number 5:  Email services now have “bulk-mail” baskets.  If what you use currently does not support this, think about moving to a new vender.  The concept is simple.  If you know someone, they can send you emails.  If you don’t know them, put them in the bulk email pile and then “choose” to allow them into your circle.  Spam Blocking software has this concept as well, but having extra layers seems critical these days, so it is worth looking into.

Chidambaram reviews CWG security



Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday reviewed the security measures for the Commonwealth Games starting October 3. Top officials including Home Secretary GK Pillai, Delhi Police Commissioner YS Dadwal and senior officials from Intelligence agencies and National Security Guards briefed him about the measures for the mega sporting event.

Dadwal is understood to have given a presentation on deployment of security personnel, traffic management and
contingency plan for emergency.
A four-tier security apparatus with Army back-up will be put in place during the Games. However, so far there is no
specific threat to the Games.

Over 10,000 athletes from 71 countries and 500,000 spectators are expected at the Games.
According to the security plan, athletes, officials and guests can visit the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium only by bus and no VIPs, except the heads of state, will be allowed to take their cars in. Parking arrangement has been made for 150 buses at the stadium.
Each of the 13 competition venues for the Commonwealth Games will have a tight security ring and special arrangements
will be made to transport the athletes to and from the Games Village. Helicopters carrying commando snipers will keep an eye on the convoy.
This is aimed to prevent incidents like the attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore in March 2009.
To ensure fleet security, each of the 574 vehicles to be used for ferrying athletes across the city will have to
undergo mandatory anti-sabotage clearance every morning before athletes board them.
Besides, after the takeover of all venues and the Village, security agencies will start their work for erecting metal
barriers, tyre busters, CCTV and metal detectors and conduct anti-sabotage drills.
"The security will be similar to that in Parliament," an official said.
Mock security drill will be held by security agencies and electronic bar codes will be provided to authorised cars and
buses.
The security forces are likely to take over the venues from September 7, a week before the arrival of the first batch
of athletes and officials.

Securing Your Computer System



Today, more and more people are using their computers for everything from communication to online banking and investing to shopping.  As we do these things on a more regular basis, we open ourselves up to potential hackers, attackers and crackers.  While some may be looking to phish your personal information and identity for resale, others simply just want to use your computer as a platform from which to attack other unknowing targets.  Below are a few easy, cost-effective steps you can take to make your computer more secure.
1. Always make backups of important information and store in a safe place separate from your computer   
2. Update and patch your operating system, web browser and software frequently.  If you have a Windows operating system, start by going to www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com and running the update wizard.  This program will help you find the latest patches for your Windows computer.  Also go to www.officeupdate.microsoft.com to locate possible patches for your Office program  
3. Install a firewall.  Without a good firewall, viruses, worms, Trojans, malware and adware can all easily access your computer from the Internet.  Consideration should be given to the benefits and differences between hardware and software based firewall programs.    
4. Review your browser and email settings for optimum security.  Why should you do this?  Active-X and JavaScript are often used by hackers to plant malicious programs into your computers.  While cookies are relatively harmless in terms of security concerns, they do still track your movements on the Internet to build a profile of you.  At a minimum set your security setting for the “internet zone” to High, and your “trusted sites zone” to Medium Low.   
5. Install antivirus software and set for automatic updates so that you receive the most current versions.   
6. Do not open unknown email attachments.  It is simply not enough that you may recognize the address from which it originates because many viruses can spread from a familiar address. 
7. Do not run programs from unknown origins.  Also, do not send these types of programs to friends and coworkers because they contain funny or amusing stories or jokes.  They may contain a Trojans horse waiting to infect a computer.  Disable hidden filename extensions.  By default, the Windows operating system is set to “hide file extensions for known file types”.  Disable this option so that file extensions display in Windows.  Some file extensions will, by default, continue to remain hidden, but you are more likely to see any unusual file extensions that do not belong.   
8. Turn off your computer and disconnect from the network when not using the computer.  A hacker can not attack your computer when you are disconnected from the network or the computer is off.  
9. Consider making a boot disk on a floppy disk in case your computer is damaged or compromised by a malicious program.  Obviously, you need to take this step before you experience a hostile breach of your system.

    Microsoft usually issues these updates on a monthly cycle. If you buy a used computer with Windows 7 make sure Windows 7 is installed.
    Strong Passwords - people often overlook this but having well thought through passwords is an important element of your computer security. The best bet here is to purchase a security package which includes firewall and anti virus software as a minimum. Top brands include McAfee and Symantec Norton products. A firewall monitors the inbound internet traffic passing through the ports of your computer. Better products also monitor outbound traffic from your computer to the internet. A company called Zone Labs offer a great free firewall product called Zone Alarm which should be used as a minimum. Anti Spyware Tool - this software is the last piece in your basic internet security set up. Good free software includes Microsoft's Windows Defender, Spybot S&D or Ewido Anti-Malware. Ewido Anti-Malware is frequently recommended in computer help forums.

    The Advancement of the Keylogger



     A keylogger is a program that runs in your computer’s background secretly recording all your keystrokes. Once your keystrokes are logged, they are hidden away for later retrieval by the attacker. The attacker then carefully reviews the information in hopes of finding passwords or other information that would prove useful to them.  For example, a keylogger can easily obtain confidential emails and reveal them to any interested outside party willing to pay for the information. 

    Keyloggers can be either software or hardware based.  Software-based keyloggers are easy to distribute and infect, but at the same time are more easily detectable.  Hardware-based keyloggers are more complex and harder to detect.  For all that you know, your keyboard could have a keylogger chip attached and anything being typed is recorded into a flash memory sitting inside your keyboard. Keyloggers have become one of the most powerful applications used for gathering information in a world where encrypted traffic is becoming more and more common.

    As keyloggers become more advanced, the ability to detect them becomes more difficult. They can violate a user’s privacy for months, or even years, without being noticed.   During that time frame, a keylogger can collect a lot of information about the user it is monitoring.  A keylogger can potential obtain not only passwords and log-in names, but credit card numbers, bank account details, contacts, interests, web browsing habits, and much more.  All this collected information can be used to steal user’s personal documents, money, or even their identity. 

    A keylogger might be as simple as an .exe and a .dll that is placed in a computer and activated upon boot up via an entry in the registry. Or, the more sophisticated keyloggers, such as the Perfect Keylogger or ProBot Activity Monitor have developed a full line of nasty abilities including:

    ·         Undetectable in the process list and invisible in operation
    ·         A kernel keylogger driver that captures keystrokes even when the user is logged off
    ·         A remote deployment wizard
    ·         The ability to create text snapshots of active applications
    ·         The ability to capture http post data (including log-ins/passwords)
    ·         The ability to timestamp record workstation usage
    ·         HTML and text log file export
    ·         Automatic e-mail log file delivery

    All keyloggers are not used for illegal purposes.  A variety of other uses have surfaced.  Keyloggers have been used to monitor web sites visited as a means of parental control over children. They have been actively used to prevent child pornography and avoid children coming in contact with dangerous elements on the web.  Additionally, in December, 2001, a federal court ruled that the FBI did not need a special wiretap order to place a keystroke logging device on a suspect’s computer. The judge allowed the FBI to keep details of its key logging device secret (citing national security concerns). The defendant in the case, Nicodemo Scarfo Jr., indicted for gambling and loan-sharking, used encryption to protect a file on his computer. The FBI used the keystroke logging device to capture Scarfo’s password and gain access to the needed file.

    Some Statistics Security Systems



    There are some statistics relating to the security of information systems that can be displayed here.  The data shown are generally considered conservative given the many companies that do not
    wants known to have experienced "security breach" because this information can lead to "negative publicity".  These companies chose to remain silent and try to handle their own security problems without publicity.
    • In 1996, U.S.  Federal Computer Incident Response Capability (FedCIRC) reported that more than 2500 "incident" on a computer system or computer network caused by the failure of the security system or any attempt to break into security systems.
    • Also in 1996, the FBI National Computer Crimes Squad, Washington DC, estimates that computer crime is detected less than 15%, and only 10% of that number was reported.
    • A study in 1997 conducted by the firm Deloitte Touch Tohmatsu shows that of 300 companies in Australia, 37% (two out of five) had experienced computer system security problems.
    • Research in 1996 by the American Bar Association show that from 1000 companies, 48% had experienced "computer fraud" in the next five years.
    • In the UK, 1996 NCC Information Security Breaches Survey indicates that computer crime rising 200% from 1995 to 1996.  This survey also showed that the losses suffered by an average of U.S. $ 30,000 for each incident.  Shown are also several organizations that suffered losses of up to U.S. $ 1.5 million.
    • The FBI reports that the trial of cases relating to computer crime skyrocketed 950% from 1996 to 1997, with the arrest of 4 to 42, and proved (convicted) in the courts increased 88% from 16 to 30 cases.
    • John Howard in his research on the blokes CERT at Carnegie Mellon University studied the incident on the Internet which lasts during the period 1989 to 1995.  Research results, among others, that each domain will experience the incident once in a year and a computer (host) will experience the incident once in 45 years.
    • Winter 1999, Computer Security Institute and the FBI conducted a survey which then results are published in a report.  In this report there are a variety of interesting statistics, among others, that 62% of respondents felt that in the last 12 months is 57% feel that connection to the Internet is a source of attack, and 86% felt the possibility of attack from within (disgruntled employees) compared with  74% who feel the attacks from hackers.
    • The number of weaknesses (vulnerabilities) system information reported to the Bugtraq increased four times (quadruple) since 1998 until 2000.  In the beginning there are about 20 reports to 80 per bulannya1.
    • In 1999 CVE2 (Common vulnerabilities and Exposure) publishes more than 1000 system weaknesses.  CVE security consists of 20 organizations (including security companies and educational institutions).
    • July 2001 appear SirCam viruses and worms Code Red (and then Nimda) that impact on the endless bandwidth.  Virus SirCam send the files from the disk of the victim (along with the virus as well) to people who have sent emails to the victim.  As a result the victim confidential files can be sent without being noticed by the victim.  On the other hand, the person who sent this email to this SirCam virus infected and also felt "bombed" with an email that big.  For example, a friend of the author gets the "bomb" an email from the victim as much as hundreds of emails SirCam virus (a total of more than 70 MBytes).  While the Code Red worm attacked Microsoft IIS server that activates a specific service (indexing).  After successfully login, this worm will scan the network to detect whether there is a server that can be entered by this worm.  When available, the worm sent
    to the target server.  On the target server that is infected is happening again and repeat the scanning process.  As a result of scanning the network out to each other and send this worm.  Two pieces of this security hole dieksploit at almost the same time so that the network load becomes heavier.  Jebolnya security system certainly had an impact.  There are several examples of the consequences of jebolnya security system, among others:
    • 1988.  Sendmail mail security system be exploited by Tapan Robert Morris so crippled the Internet system.  This activity can be classified as a "denial of service attack".  An estimated cost to repair and other things that's missing is about $ 100 million.  In 1990 Morris was sentenced (convicted) and only fined $ 10,000.

    • February 7, 2000 (Monday) until Wednesday morning, February 9, 2000.  Some of the world's leading web attacked by a "distributed denial of service attack" (DDoS attack) so as not to provide services (down) for several hours.  The place that was attacked, among others: Yahoo, Buy.com, eBay, CNN, Amazon.com, ZDNet, E-Trade.  The FBI issued a new tool to search for programs trinoo or Tribal Flood Net (TFN), which allegedly used to carry out attacks from across the world.
    • May 4, 2001.  Gibson Research Corp. Site.  (Grc.com) attacked Denial of Service attack by 13-year-old child so that the bandwidth of grc.com consisting of two (2) T1 connection becomes exhausted.  Steve Gibson then examines the software used to attack (DoS bots, SubSeven trojan), the channel that used unstuck communicate (via IRC), and finally found a few things about this DoS attack.  The full information on the site www.grc.com.
    • June 2001.  Researchers at UC Berkeley and the University of Maryland, successfully intercepting the data residing on the wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11b), which began rapidly adopted by companies.

    Computer Crime Increasing



    The number of computer crime (computer crime), especially those related to information systems, will continue to rise due to several things, among others:
    • Business applications that use (based) information technology and computer networks has increased. For example, the current emerging business applications such as on-line banking, electronic commerce (e-commerce), Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), and many more.
    Even e-commerce applications will be one driver applications in Indonesia (through the "Telematics Indonesia" and Nusantara 21). Similarly, in various corners of the world looks ecommerce applications began to increase.
    • Decentralization (and distributed) servers cause more systems must be addressed. It requires more skilled operators and administrators are also likely to be deployed in all locations. While looking for a reliable operator and administrator is very difficult.
    • Transition from single to multi-vendor vendor so that more systems or devices that must be understood and the problem of interoperability between vendors is more difficult to handle.     Are there hackers and crackers Indonesia?  Surely there.  Both " school of thought " ( madhhab ) hackers exist in Indonesia.  The group that adheres to " old school " where the hacking was not associated with electronic crime generally joins in the various mailing lists and groups both
    Open or closed.  There are several mailing lists where hackers join, among others:
    Mailing list of the micro- pau.  This mailing list may be one of the oldest in Indonesia, starting in the late 1980's by being in school in foreign countries ( driven by Microelectronics ITB PAU staff where the author is one of the motorcycle, which later became a minority in the mailing list ).  This list was based on the electrical department of University of Manitoba, Canada ( which has an address pau-mikro@ee.umanitoba.ca ) and then moved into paumikro@nusantara.net.
